Cat Cat at a glance

Cat Cat is a village a short distance from Sapa town, about 1.2 to 2.5 miles (2 to 4 km) from the center. A stream runs through it, and water wheels along the water are what most visitors photograph. Parts of the footpath are steep, so this is a walk for sturdy shoes rather than flip-flops.

The national tourism authority lists Cat Cat among the villages you can visit without a guide. That applies to the village visit only. It does not mean you can climb from Cat Cat to the top of Fansipan on your own. That is a separate trek with its own rules, covered on our Fansipan page. This site is an independent guide and does not sell tickets for Cat Cat.

A visit to Cat Cat in four steps

The order in which most visits go, with the practical points for each step.

Getting there

You can walk from town, take a taxi or order a ride in the Grab app. Grab started a 7-seat GrabCar service in Sapa on 28 July 2025, but a car for a specific trip, and especially for the ride back, is not guaranteed. Vehicles stop before the ticket area, so the last stretch is on foot.

The ticket area

You pay entry at the ticket area. Prices are covered in the table below. Keep small VND notes ready, because cash is the normal way to pay for small purchases in northern Vietnam.

The village path

The path runs along the stream past houses and the water wheels. It is not a flat, step-free loop, so judge your time by how fast you walk and how often you stop to look.

Heading back

Steep sections work in both directions. Keep some energy for the return and have a plan for a ride, in case the Grab app shows no car when you want one.

Neither list comes from the village itself, and the first one says plainly that its prices are not fixed. The child price is where the two lists differ most. Ask at the window what the ticket includes and how children are priced, and pay the amount shown on the board.

A separate landscape fee for the Cat Cat waterfall was announced for 1 January 2025: VND 10,000 from age 16 and VND 5,000 from age 6 up to 16. Whether it is already part of your ticket today is something to ask at the entrance. Do not assume the two add up, and do not assume swimming at the waterfall is allowed. Follow the signs on site.

Opening hours can change, so check them on the day, especially if you plan an evening visit.

Visiting respectfully

People live and work in Cat Cat. Houses, yards and workshops are not exhibits, so stay on the path and keep your voice down near homes.

  • Ask before you photograph a person, and accept a no without argument.
  • Do not photograph children and do not hand out sweets or money to them.
  • If you buy something, buy from the person whose craft it is and pay the price you agreed.
  • Take your rubbish with you, including water bottles.

Planning around Cat Cat

Cat Cat fits a half day and combines easily with the rest of Sapa. For a longer walk through terraced villages, go to the Muong Hoa Valley. Multi-day routes and homestays are described on our Sapa trekking page. If you are still deciding where to sleep, read where to stay in Sapa.

Mist and rain change the walk. The path is slippery when wet, and visibility can drop quickly. Look at the Sapa weather and best time to visit page before you set the day. If you are still on your way, Hanoi to Sapa explains the train, bus and van options.

Sapa is one stop in a longer trip for many travelers. On the northern coast, Ha Long Bay is known for its cruises, and Cat Ba island lies by Lan Ha Bay. Both have their own guides.

Published 2026 figures vary: VND 100,000 to 150,000 for adults in one list and VND 150,000 in another, with child prices between VND 40,000 and 90,000. Children under about 1 m are usually free. Confirm the price at the window.
