Getting from Hanoi to Sapa: the short version
There is no railway to Sapa. The night train from Hanoi ends at Lao Cai, and from there you continue about 35 km (22 mi) on a mountain road. The other option is a bus or van that runs all the way to Sapa. Both work, and the choice mostly comes down to whether you want to sleep on the way.
Part of the journey is the Noi Bai to Lao Cai expressway. One bus operator advertises private transfers at about 5 hours, and its scheduled buses take about 6 hours. These are planning figures for a normal day; traffic and landslides can add time. The timetables and prices below come from the operators and are examples as of October 2026, so confirm them when you book.

The options compared
Prices are one way unless stated and come from one bus operator and one train seller.
| Option | Leaves Hanoi | Arrives | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| VIP seat bus (S28) | 07:00 | 13:00, Sapa | USD 16 |
| VIP seat bus (S12) | 07:00 or 15:00 | 13:00 or 21:00, Sapa | USD 22 |
| Sleeper bus | 07:00 or 22:00 | 13:00 or 04:00, Sapa | USD 24 (USD 48 return) |
| Night train (SP3) | 22:00 | 05:55, Lao Cai | โ |
| Lao Cai to Sapa transfer | โ | About 1 hour | Extra |
The operator's Hanoi stop is at 204 Tran Quang Khai and its Sapa stop at 01 Vuon Treo. Do not assume hotel pickup comes with every ticket. Some seat buses are sold as "limousine" or VIP, which describes the vehicle class and not a railway. Train fares depend on the date and the berth, so check the current price when you book.

The night train to Lao Cai
One train seller lists the SP3 leaving Hanoi at 22:00 and reaching Lao Cai at 05:55, about 8 hours. The return SP4 leaves at 21:30 and reaches Hanoi at 05:35. Another seller shows SP3 at 21:50 to 06:15, so the timetable is not the same everywhere. Confirm the times with the seller you book through.
The train seller says advance booking is required and recommends arriving at the station 45โ60 minutes before departure. Children under 5 travel free if they share a berth with a parent, with an extra bed at an extra charge. Those are that seller's terms, not rules for every Vietnamese train.
At Lao Cai, a transfer to Sapa takes about an hour and is sold separately. It is not a guaranteed connection, so book it with the train or arrange a taxi or shuttle in advance.

Which option suits you
- Want to arrive in the afternoon and see the road: a daytime VIP seat bus.
- Want to save a night of accommodation: the sleeper bus at 22:00 or the night train. You arrive in the early morning, so ask your hotel about early check-in or luggage storage.
- Travelling as a group or with children: a private transfer, advertised at about 5 hours.
Safety on the road
The UK government's travel advice says night bus accidents are more common and that tiredness is a risk. That is not a statement about one operator, but it is a reason to prefer a daytime departure if you can. Keep your valuables with you, and allow extra time in the rainy months, when roads can be affected by landslides.
Once you are in Sapa
Grab announced 7-seat GrabCar service in Sapa from 28 July 2025. The published start fare was VND 32,400 for the first 2 km, then VND 18,000 per km plus a time charge, not including tolls. That is a historical tariff and not a quote, and a ride back from the valley is not guaranteed. Match the car and driver with the app. Your next steps: where to stay, trekking and Fansipan. If you have a spare day in Hanoi, Ha Long Bay is the usual day trip from the capital.
